The Budapest criteria are internationally agreed for use in CRPS. You need to assess your patient to find out their
signs – changes in the affected limb which you can see or feel when you examine your patient – ,
symptoms – changes in the limb, which the patient reports. You need to do this in 4 separate categories: sensory, swelling/sweating, vasomotor, motor, see checklist.
If your patient has signs in at least 2 categories, and symptoms in at least 3 categories, and if there are no other conditions that may better explain their pain, then they fulfil Budapest criteria.
