Splinting is rarely indicated unless this facilitates function. Care should be taken to avoid development of dependence on splints
Providing a boot, brace or splint for long term use should not be encouraged and clinicians should provide patients with appropriate education and instruction to reduce this practice
Whilst it is important not to foster a dependence on splints, braces, pressure garments or boots they can be used judicially to facilitate function and to address secondary problems such as soft tissue contractures or swelling management.
